beat — measure.
The main measure the clock counts out and strikes aloud: two half-beats, four quarters. The day divides into a hundred beats — that is how the towns and the Guild count time. But clocks are rare and costly; in a small village there is no clock and no one needs one, for the day there is measured by the times of day and by breaths.
