Character

Bartek

Bartek — laborer, of the Combes.

A laborer from the hamlet of the Combes, twenty-four years old. In July he broke three ribs — they knit in a month instead of three. He's one of the first living proofs on which Zora builds her pattern of impossible healings. Straightforward, honest, a little slow in his thinking; he makes no hero of himself and speaks in plain facts: "I do this and that. It hurt here. Now it doesn't hurt."
